The Arrival of Victoria

Heather usually worked at the offices of C&D as a receptionist while she studied acting. She had always wanted to break into theatre or TV and had even snagged a role as "The Second Blonde Girl" in a recent production. When she heard that the TV studio was looking for a Newsperson she was quick to apply and was duly called into the TV Station for an audition.

 |
Like so many other hopefuls (of which there were a number), Heather hoped that she had what it takes. Unfortunately so did a number of others, and competition was fierce. "Good Evening, here is the news presented by Heather," she practised. She even tried a bit of weather reporting "Winds light to moderate."
When her audition was over she went to the balcony to wait for the result. There she spotted another Twinn who looked equally hopeful. Heather could not help thinking that she was very pretty, and could be her main competition for the TV role. She went over to the Twinn, "Good morning, are you here for the auditions?"
"Good morning," the Twinn replied, "I am, but I don't think I have the courage to do this. They haven't called me in yet and I think I have cold feet."
"It's not that bad, I have just come out and it went very smoothly."
"I don't know if I am TV material at all."
"I have to admit that I am more of a theatre Twinn myself." Heather explained, "It would be nice to break into TV but I will take any role at the moment, I need the experience if I am going to go into movies later on."
Just then an assistant producer popped his head around the door. "Which of you is Victoria? we are ready for you now."
"Good luck, break a leg." Heather called as the very nervous Victoria left to go to the studio.
|
 |
Inside the studio everybody was all hustle and bustle and Victoria was shown her chair. Before she knew it the cold eye of the camera was on her. "We're on in 5.... 4..... 3..... ........ ........" the assistant gestured.
|
 |
"Um, here is the nose, I mean, here is the news read by..... um......"
But Victoria's nervousness got the better of her and she was just not able to complete the sentence. "I am sorry, I can't do this."
|
 |
Heather was waiting for Victoria to come out, "How did it go Hon?"
"Not good, I just froze and made a complete mess of the lines."
"Aww, that's OK, not everybody is a TV Star. They told me that I didn't have the "presence" to make it as an Newsperson. I bet they they gave the part to some blonde plastic fashion doll. Borrow my hankie and dry your eyes. Lets go sit down on the wall and you can tell me all about it."
|
 |
So Heather and Victoria sat down on the wall and Victoria told Heather her story of woe.
|
 |
"My mother and father are famous Superheroes. I don't know if you have ever heard of Electric Lime and Ultra Violet?"
Sadly Heather had not, but she decided that as soon as she could she would ask Dawn who was an authority on Superheroes.
"They were my mother and father, and they dressed in bright costumes and had found their Superhero names in a big box of crayons - they had picked names to match their outfits. Dad was Electric Lime and Mom was Ultra Violet. When I was a baby they gave me a little orange jumpsuit and told me that my Superhero name would be Cosmic Tangerine, but my parents were both very busy being Superheros and saving the planet and its occupants from threats and never noticed when I got too tall to wear my Cosmic Tangerine outfit.
One morning when I was just a toddler, my mother, Ultra Violet, received a call from Godzilla saying that Violet and Lime were needed in Japan as soon as possible to keep Tokyo from being stomped by a space monster. Mum had been about to interview a number of candidates who had come in response for an advertisement to be my nurse. She grabbed her tights and cape and headed out the door. “You’ve got the job,” she said to the first woman in line.
Unfortunately for me, the first woman in line was Miss Agatha Plum. She was a skinny, no-nonsense type of person with very definite ideas on child-rearing. She straightened her nurse cap and looked down at me. I had been sitting on the floor making a picture with finger paints. “We’ll have none of that, young lady,” announced Miss Plum, and dragged me to the nearest bathroom to wash my hands.
Over the years, I was not allowed to do anything which would hint of fun. I was tutored privately by Miss Plum and did not get to go to school, though my parents did pay for me to take ballet lessons from a private tutor who turned out to be Miss Plum’s younger sister, Araminta Plum. Araminta was almost as fussy as her sister and I spent many lonely hours in my bedroom, reading. I had read all the books in the house several times and eventually started in with the “A” book of the encyclopedia and was quite an expert on everything from aardvarks and antimony up through myrrh, myrtle, and myxomycetes. I have finished “M” and am ready to start with “N,” and am eagerly anticipating Nails, Neanderthal man, Nepal, and Nevada.
The unfortunate result of spending so much time by myself or with the Plum sisters (or the Prune Sisters as I called them) was that I became very fearful of new situations and unknown things. I was allowed to walk in the park with Agatha, but was not allowed to sit on the grass because it would stain my dress; Agatha did not believe in letting her young charges wear anything less formal than a frilly dress and tights for their outings. I couldn't even wade in the lake and even though I had read many fascinating facts about ducks in “D” they terrified me in person, I was not allowed to walk outside the paths and if we met someone with any kind of dog, Agatha would stand in front of me to ‘protect’ me. One time my father brought home a kitten for me after he and mum had assisted Cosmic Cat the Caped Crusader, but Agatha gave it away to the cook because she did not want me to be exposed to a possible source of allergens and dander. So now cats, with their pointy ears and sticking out whiskers, frighten me too.
Heather was shocked, she couldn't imagine having to live like that. "You poor dear, you should have run away the first opportunity you got."
|
 |
Victoria continued, "One afternoon, straight after my ballet lessons with Araminta Plum I went upstairs and found the “M” volume of the encyclopedia and started to read. I knew that I would be in big trouble if Agatha knew I was reading before changing into my every day dress, but decided to tempt fate anyway.

Just as I was starting to read about macaco lemurs, there was a glimmer in the middle of my bedroom and I was surprised to see two Emmas materialize in my bedroom.
“Hello,” said the first Emma, who had curly hair and 04 skin. “I am Corky, the Emma of Years Gone By. Are you Cosmic Tangerine?”
“Uh, yes, I mean, I used to be but the outfit doesn’t fit me anymore. My real name is Jocelyn.”
“Hello, Jocelyn,” said Corky, shaking Jocelyn’s hand. “Your parents sent us. This is Sally, the Emma of Years To Come” (the other Emma nodded) “and we are on a mission to help you get out of this rut you are in."
|
 |
"I sure could do with some help. The Prune Sisters are driving me to distraction, all I want is to lead a normal life."
"Well, we are here to assist with that. Your parents are very busy battling cosmic forces beyond the galaxy and have asked that we help get you out of here. It's very important that nobody knows where you go to because one day you may be called upon to take up your cape and help fight the forces of stupidity and ignorance."
"I am ready to leave now, where do I sign?"
The one Emma handed over a ticket to Jocelyn. "This ticket will get you to South Africa, there you must meet with 2 Twinns who go by the names of Dawn and Caitlyn, they are former agents of the Giant Head from Outer Space. They will help you to disappear into the crowd and lead a normal life. There is a box waiting outside for you, all labelled and ready for collection. All you have to do is get inside and when you wake up you will be very far from here."
"At that point I decided to make my choice, either grab the opportunity with both hands or hide forever behind the Prune Sisters. I took the ticket. "I am ready, show me the box.""
|
 |
"Caitlyn and Dawn were agents of the Giant Head from Outer Space?" Heather asked, amazed at this news. "Talk about still waters running deep!"
Victoria laughed, "I don't know if it's true or not, because I have not found them yet. I just hopped into that box and here I am. The first thing I had to do was find a job, which as you saw did not work out too well, the next thing I must do is find a place to stay and start looking for Caitlyn and Dawn."
"Oh that's easy peasy, I know where they live. Caitlyn and Dawn are amongst my bestest friends! I will take you to see them right now."
|
 |
Back at home Dawn and Caitlyn were relaxing after a hard week's work at C&D. Towser the galavanting poodle was back in his yard, the budgies had all returned to their cages and the late afternoon sun was making the 2 friends lethargic.
"Cait, we should do this more often." Dawn said, reaching for another biscuit.
"I agree Dawn, all work and no play makes our armatures squeak." Caitlyn said from underneath her hat.
"And this rain hasn't helped either."
"I know, it's been so miserable we haven't had to sit in the fridge all summer."
"Oh look, here comes Heather, I wonder why she looks so excited?" |
 |
"Hiya Girls. Caitlyn, you never told me that you and Dawn used to be agents for the Giant Head from Outer Space!"
"Hi Heather, it was a long time ago, and there are some things we cannot discuss. It's bad enough you know now. How did you find out?"
"Shall I erase her memory Cait?" Dawn asked.
"Not yet Dawn, lets hear what she says first and how she found out."
|
 |
Heather introduced Victoria to Caitlyn and Dawn and she told the whole story once again.
"Hmm, very interesting, I didn't realise that people even remembered that we were agents all that time ago." Caitlyn said.
"I am sure that we can find a spot for Victoria at Tumbling Twinns Cait."
"Yep, welcome to Tumbling Twinns Victoria. Or should I say Jocelyn?"
"I prefer Victoria Caitlyn, my mother always wanted to call me that, but it wasn't in vogue with Superheroes at the time."
"Well, Victoria it shall be. I will even get out my official sword and we can do you a proper naming ceremony one day."
"That will be fun, you haven't given names out in quite some time Cait."
"I know, I wonder where is my sword? Anyway, before we do that, there is one small thing I need to do...."
"Aaaaah... I love this part." Dawn said.
"Heather, Victoria, look into the lens please..."
|
 |
And so Victoria joined the Tumbling Twinns, and neither her nor Heather remembered anything about our 2 agents from the Giant Head who lived in their midst. One day when the call comes Cosmic Tangerine will be ready to take her place amongst the Superheroes. But until that day arrives she will be blissfully unaware of her destiny. Now please look into the lens.... |
