| Causes of and factors contributing to the loss of the Angelina Lauro.
|
On 30 March 1979, a fire broke out in the crew galley while the Angelina was moored at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, in the United States Virgin Islands. It spread to a dining room and the passengers and crew had to be evacuated. The fire had been fought on board by the crew and shoreside firefighters, but heavy smoke and flames forced them to leave the burning vessel and try conquer the blaze from the quayside. It took four days to extinguish the fire and the vessel was declared a constructive total loss. The fire had been caused when oil in an unattended electric skillet overheated and ignited. In July of that year she was refloated and sold to Taiwanese breakers, however, on the 24th of September while under tow she took on a list and rolled over and sank.
