Whippet Medium Mark A Tank at the Army College
This particular Whippet Medium Mark A can be found at the Army College in Thaba-Tshwane and was photographed by Terry Cawood in January 2012. What is interesting is that the vehicle was originally delivered in 1919 to the SA Army, for fund raising purposes under the name HMLS Union (His Majestys Land Ship?). It became the property of the Air Force and was used during the 1922 Rand Revolt to support the air force that were bombing the strikers positions in Johannesburg and on the East Rand. One of the crew members was killed by a shot fired through the vision slit. The vehicle was retired in 1939 and now serves as a gate guard at the army college.
