Highgate Cemetery. London

Highgate Cemetery in North London is on my list of places to see if ever I get to the UK again. Its a legendary place filled with the opulence of the Victorian era, as well as the resting place of the rich, famous, infamous, poor and obscure. It's also possible that I have family interred in it, although they would tend to fall under the obscure category. It is situated in the London Boroughs of Camden, Haringey and Islington. The northwestern wooded area originally opened in 1839, and the the initial design was by architect and entrepreneur Stephen Geary.
In 1854 the area to the east of the original area was bought to form the eastern part of the cemetery and this area is still in use today, The Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust was set up in 1975 and acquired the freehold of both East and West Cemeteries by 1981, since when they have had responsibility for the maintenance of the location.
The official website is at Highgate Cemetery. The cemetery main gate can be found at Google earth Co-ordinates 51°34.014'N 0°8.792'W or download the KMZ file. These wonderful pictures are courtesy of Ronnie Lovemore. Images open in a new window.
