Cemeteries in Heidelberg

Heidelberg in Gauteng has a suprisingly diverse collection of cemeteries, they range from the magnificent Kloof Cemetery, to the overgrown Schuins Street Cemetery, with all permutations inbetween. I visited 4 of the important ones, but missed out on at least 3 more. This webpage is dedicated to the Cemeteries of Heidelberg.

Heidelberg Kloof Cemetery is a magnificent old cemetery, its graves range from the founders of Heidelberg, graves from the Anglo Boer War, Concentration Camp Graves, Commonwealth War Graves, ordinary citizens and famous poets. There is a small Jewish Cemetery across from it and it is surrounded on two sides by hills. It has some magnificent statuary too, and while parts are overgrown its generally not in too bad a condition given its age. The cemetery can be found at 26° 29.728'S 28° 20.804'E

Heidelberg Camp Cemetery (Kampplaas) Has the graves and memorial for the Heidelberg Concentration Camp, as well as a lot of modern burials and is currently in use. It can be found at 26° 29.075'S  28° 22.225'E

Heidelberg Schuins Street Cemetery The cemetery at Schuins Street is bisected by a dirt road. One side is the Muslim cemetery, and the other side has a fenced African cemetery. The former is well maintained, but the latter is so badly overgrown there is no way to even begin to see how many graves there are. I also believe there is an unfenced area close by which is probably a continuation of the African Cemetery. The gates to both can be be found at the Google Earth co-ordinates 26° 31.176'S  28° 21.798'E

Heidelberg Rensburg Cemetery is situated almost at the edge of the town, a smaller cemetery, but with some really old graves in it. A lot of the older stones have fallen and when I visited the cemetery it was overgrown on one side, and cleared on the other. It can be found at the Google Earth co-ordinates 26° 31.669'S  28° 22.624'E
