The De la Rey Plaque in Langlaagte

I went looking for this memorial in August 2011 at Langlaagte Station. Admittedly this is (or was) an odd place to find a plaque, but the place has significance in the death of General Koos De La Rey and possibly the South West African Campaign in World War 1. On 15 September 1914, Generals De la Rey and Christiaan Beyers set off from Johannesburg to Potchefstroom on what was then the main road between Pretoria and Potchefstroom, to consult with rebels who were opposed to the South African invasion of German South West Africa, At the same time the notorious Foster Gang was being chased by police who set up roadblocks in an attempt to stop them. The car carrying the two Generals jumped the roadblock and a policeman fired a shot at their vehicle. The bullet supposedly ricochetted and hit De la Rey in the back and ended up lodged in his heart. He died in seconds.
The place where he died in was marked with a plaque which refered to him as "Die LEEU van Wes-Transvaal". It was at the entrance of Langlaagte Station in Deville Street in Paarlshoop, The plaque has since been removed, leaving behind a varnished piece of wood and a smaller brass plate that reads "Herdenking. Rapportryersfeeste 1949".
