Farm Cemeteries in Magaliesburg

The rural area of Magaliesburg has a large number of cemeteries on the farms that were originally in this area. Time has seen these farms split into smaller divisions and as a result even more cemetries have come into being. Unfortunately many have never been documented and have been swallowed by bush and grass or just ploughed under. My first excursion was to find a military grave in the Koesterfontein area and eventually became much more complicated with 7 cemeteries eventually being photographed. Images open in a new window.

Blaauwbank Cemetery. (Zuickerboschfontein 151)

Technically this cemetery is called Zuickerboschfontein 151, and is situated in the area of the Blaauwbank River and Blaauwbank Mine. It took 3 trips to find it, and the area where I eventually found it was terribly overgrown and I can see why I missed it originally. There are 13 names associated with the cemetery and its first grave dates around 1866. In August of 2011 I revisited the cemetery and a fire had cleared a lot of the undergrowth and I was finally able to see the whole cemetery.

Farmhouse Overview (1506x441)

Very close to the Blaauwbank farmhouse area is an African cemetery with over 60 graves in it, sadly though a lack of headstones makes it almost impossible to ascertain the age of the cemetery. It also falls under the farm Zuickerboschfontein 151.

Koesterfontein Farm Cemetery.

This is the cemetery that started it off in Magaliesburg. I drove past it at least 20 times and even stopped outside the grove of trees but it was impossible to see the graves inside the grove. I was looking for the military grave on this cemetery which is why I was there in the first place. I was also able to document another small cemetery on an adjacent farm, sadly though, only one of the graves there was identifyable.

Steenkoppie 153 Cemetery.

There are at least 4 cemeteries associated with the farm Steenkoppie. This is one of the bigger ones with 28 names listed as being in the cemetery, with the first grave dating around 1891
