Horizon View Cemetery, Roodepoort

Horizon View Cemetery can be found just South of Westgate and Horizon Village and borders Van Santen Road. At the time of my original visit in Feb 2008 It was unfenced, overgrown and the only way you could see that it is a cemetery was the prescence of berms and the occasional toppled gravestone. Sadly the cemetery is used as a shortcut by the locals and if you didnt know better you would think that is just another vacant stand. I believe that a complete register does not exist for this cemetery and that the majority of people buried in it are Africans. It was opened in 1935.
I returned to the cemetery in September 2011, it had been partly fenced and the grass was short so I was able to get a better sense of the site and see the graves. Sadly though, the incidence of toppled graves is still too high and its still being used as a shortcut. I also found a Commemorative Plaque at the site which I had not seen on my original visit.
This cemetery can be found on Google Earth at 26° 8'36.46"S   27°51'51.18"E or Download the KMZ File
