The Concentration Camp Graves in Vereeniging Old Cemetery.

The photographs on this page are of the graves and memorial to the inmates of the Vereeniging Concentration Camp in the Old Cemetery in Vereeniging. I have since heard that the concentration camp was situated where Macauvlei is (a golf estate just outside Vereeniging). I have no real way of knowing what the death rate was, neither can I explain why there are so few physical graves in this cemetery. Sadly, the cemetery is very neglected and the grass is high and I am sure many graves are buried beneath it. The only way of knowing that there are inmates buried here is the large marble stone with all the names on. I counted 157 names on it, but cannot be sure whether that is all. Somehow, I don't see too much work being done in this cemetery. Images open in a new window.
