The Suideroord Concentration Camp Cemetery.

These photographs were taken in October 2007 at the The Suideroord Concentration Camp Cemetery in Suiderood. 716 inmates of the Turffontein Concentration Camp are buried at this site, which is on Piet Meyer's farm Klipriviersberg. The site was officially opened in 1962, although there is a plaque that states that the site was open in 1941, but was apparently vandalised by an anti Ossewa Brandwag group. Sources say that some 5000 inmates were at the Turffontein Camp. The memorial is laid out as a series of coffin shaped terraces with a central name list. Sadly, unlike the cemetery at Irene there is little or no indication of the significance of certain areas of the cemetery, and I came away knowing less than when I went in. More information on the camp history may be found at The British Concentration Camps of the South African War website. The Google Earth Co-ordinates are: -26.272334°  28.024066° or download the KMZ File. Images open in a new window.
