The Port Elizabeth Concentration Camp.

The photographs on this page are courtesy of Ronnie Lovemore and are reproduced with his permission. There are a number of sites associated with this camp, the Graves and Memorial being in North End Cemetery (33° 55.382'S  25° 36.472'E), while the camp was situated initially at the Nora's Lane section of the Turf Club, then later at the old PAG camping grounds, off Cape Road (today Kemsley Park ( 33° 57.306'S  25° 35.571'E) ). The camp was closed in November 1902, and subsequently a monument was erected at the Kemsely Park site. The plaque at North End Cemetery has 14 names on it, and the lettering on the memorial was stolen as early as 2003, but in 2011 it was replaced with new lettering. More on this history of the camp may be found at The British Concentration Camps of the South African War website. More information about the camp and memorials can be found at Port Elizabethse Konsentrasiekamp en Begraafplaasgedenkteken (Afrikaans) Images open in a new window.
