The Mafeking Concentration Camp Cemetery and Memorial.

These photographs, contributed by Terry Cawood, were taken at the Mafeking (now known as Mafikeng) Concentration Camp Cemetery and Memorial. Like most of the concentration camps, its existence was marred by a high death rate amongst the Boer women and children. The number of recorded burials is 858, however, a smaller cemetery records 220 graves, but it is possible that this number may be higher as many other burials may have taken place but were never recorded. It is impossible to know how many Africans lost their lives during or as a result of the siege and, sadly much of what was previously writen about the siege of Mafeking should not be read as being gospel. There are many points of view to this event during the Boer War, and a lot of new information has come to light which does offer an alternative viewpoint to what was previously accepted. I do however advise reading the Sol Plaatje version of the Siege of Mafeking.
A visit to Mafikeng.com will explain much more about the town and its past. Images open in a new window.
